Core Curriculum


The following table lists the basic or general education course requirements for all UL Lafayette curricula. These courses, also collectively referred to as the “core curriculum,” are mandated by both the Louisiana Board of Regents and the University. This table provides only an overview of the broad requirements; a given curriculum may specify a particular course to fulfill a core requirement.

The following requirements are identical in both cores.

English Composition (6 hours)

ENGL 101 -ENGL 102  or the equivalent.

Mathematics (6 hours)

With permission of the Dean three hours may be statistics (STAT)

Behavioral Science (6 hours)

Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology

Natural Sciences (9 hours)

Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Microbiology, Physical Science, or Physics (including both biological and physical sciences, with six hours in the same science).

English Composition (6 hours)

ENGL 101  and ENGL 102  (or equivalent course)

Mathematics (6 hours)

With permission of the Dean three hours may be statistics (STAT)

Behavioral Science (6 hours)

Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology – with 3 hours at the 200+level

Natural Sciences (9 hours)

Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Microbiology, Physical Science, or Physics (including both biological and physical sciences, with six hours in the same science)

  1. Appropriate honors courses also fulfill the core requirements.
  2. To fulfill core requirements of the BOR and the University of Louisiana system, all curricula must include exposure to diverse cultures, both in the U.S. and abroad.
