About the Graduate School

The Graduate School

The Graduate School supports a variety of programs leading to master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as selected certifications. Eligibility for admission is determined by the Dean, who acts within the framework established by the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors and the University’s Graduate Council.

As the principal academic and administrative officer of the Graduate School, the Dean follows the policies of the Graduate School. Implementation of those policies as well as operational, managerial, and strategic-planning matters requiring attention are left to the discretion of the Dean. When issues in such matters are recurrent, the Dean shall seek the advice and consent of the Graduate Council and individual graduate degree programs and academic colleges as appropriate.

The University offers a variety of doctoral, master’s, graduate certificates, and non-degree programs.

The Graduate Council

The Graduate Council, which reports to the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, defines, in consultation with the Dean of the Graduate School, the policies that govern graduate education at the University in compliance with the regulations of the University, the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System, the Board of Regents, and the State of Louisiana. Specifically, the Council defines minimum criteria relating to admission, retention, and completion of students in degree and non-degree graduate programs; its jurisdiction also extends to policies governing graduate faculty membership and application of college criteria for that membership, revision and/or review of existing graduate programs, graduate degree requirements, graduate courses, and graduate assistantships and fellowships. The Council also advises the Dean of the Graduate School on matters pertaining to graduate education.

Graduate Student Organization

The Graduate Student Organization, an autonomous association, provides financial assistance to students in their pursuit of academic achievement and excellence. The organization also strives to maintain lines of communication between the administration of the University and graduate students. The GSO coordinates its efforts with the Graduate School senators elected to the Student Government Association and through membership on the Graduate Council.
