Undergraduate Degree Requirements 

School of Architecture and Design

  1. A grade of “C” or better is required in all courses. Courses with a grade below “C” must be repeated. A grade of “C” or better is required to meet prerequisite requirements.

  2. All freshman-year courses must be completed before enrolling in junior-year courses.

  3. All sophomore-year courses must be completed before enrolling in senior-year courses.

  4. Students must submit a comprehensive portfolio of work for review as a requirement of their second semester in their sophomore-year studio. Each student’s portfolio will be evaluated for evidence of proficient abilities necessary for academic success in the next level studio course.The portfolio review includes an evaluation of students’ transcripts. Any student who does not demonstrate competency in the portfolio review will not be allowed to enroll in the next level studio course.

  5. Students who fail any studio course at UL Lafayette, must retake and pass that course at UL Lafayette in order to advance to the next level studio course in the sequence.

    a. Students may appeal their studio grade in accordance with the School’s Review Standards and Procedures for Failing Grades Appealed in Design Studio. Students may not attempt any design studio more than twice. If unsuccessful in the second attempt, a student may appeal their grade in accordance with the School’s Review Standards and Procedures for Failing Grades Appealed in Design Studio and request a waiver to take the course for a third time. The Design Review Committee will evaluate requests on a case-by-case basis.

  6. Students may choose a minor within any college, regardless of their major. Minors are not required to complete a degree in the School of Architecture and Design. Students must follow all UL Lafayette Minor Policies  as stated in the Academic Catalog.

  7. Students are required to have a laptop that meets the minimum computer specification requirements to enroll in sophomore-year studio courses and DSGN 235 - Design and the Computer . Minimum computer specification requirements are included in the School of Architecture and Design’s Computer Policy.

  8. Accrediting boards require selective documentation of original student-produced coursework. All materials submitted for credit may be retained by the faculty and become property of the School of Architecture and Design for future use in demonstrating student accomplishments. According to the College of the Arts, Art Galleries and Exhibition statement, student and alumni work may be exhibited from time to time as selected by the faculty.

Transfer Requirements

The following pertain to all students transferring into the School of Architecture and Design:

  1. Students may transfer credits according to the Transfer of Credit Policy  stated in the Academic Catalog. The College of the Arts Assistant Dean is responsible for evaluating transfer coursework.

  2. Students who seek to transfer studio credit are required to submit a portfolio of work to be reviewed by an ad hoc Review Committee composed of School of Architecture and Design faculty. Students may be required to submit to the Review Committee additional course documentation including course descriptions, syllabi, and course assignments to aid in the evaluation of design studio work.

  3. Students transferring from a CIDA, NAAB, or NASAD accredited program may receive a maximum of 2 years of design studio credit.
