Secondary Education & Special Education Mild/Moderate Grades 6-12, M.A.T.

The M.A.T. is appropriate for only individuals who do NOT hold any teaching certification. This program is designed for persons interested in acquiring initial teaching skills of students with mild/moderate disabilities at the secondary education levels along the special education continuum of placements.

Admissions Requirements


  • General admission requirements of the Graduate School
  • To be considered for admission to this program, applicants also are required to provide official results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); official scores must be sent directly from the test administrator to the Graduate School.
  • Passing level scores on the PRAXIS Pre-Professional Basic Skills Tests or a composite ACT score of 22 or a combined Verbal and Math SAT score of 1030
  • Passing level score on an appropriate Content area PRAXIS test (PRAXIS II)
    • Candidates in the MAT 6-12 program take PRAXIS II Secondary Core Subject Exam in the area of content concentration
  • 3 letters of recommendation
    • Candidates for admission who are currently working as teachers must have letters of recommendation from an appropriate school official who has direct professional knowledge of the candidate’s skills and potential.
    • Candidates for admission who are not currently working as teachers must have letters of recommendation from a non-relative, who has direct knowledge of the candidate’s potential for success as a graduate level student and a working professional. Employers and previous university/college faculty are examples of appropriate sources.
    • Additional recommendations may be requested to support candidacy if determined necessary by program admission committee.
  • Statement of purpose.

Graduation Requirements


  • Satisfactory completion of all required course work within the timelines and at the grade levels established by Graduate School policies
  • Passage of the following PRAXIS Pedagogy Examination at the level dictated by State authorities
    • Education of Exceptional Students: Core Content Knowledge and Mild Moderate Disabilities (0543)
    • Secondary Grades 7-12: Principles of Learning & Teaching 7-12 (0524)
  • Satisfactory completion of the MAT Special Education Portfolio
