Engineering, MSE, Petroleum Engineering Concentration

All specialty aspects of petroleum engineering that align with UL Lafayette Department of Petroleum Engineering faculty's areas of expertise can serve as potential specialization areas for both course selection and thesis topics. Example areas of particular emphasis by the department include reservoir engineering, tertiary recovery, environmental engineering, computational fluid flow, drilling, process economics, and computer-visualization of petroleum systems.

Course Requirements


Thesis Program


The Thesis track requires completion of a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours of graduate credit with a minimum GPA of 3.0 as follows:

  1. A minimum of 12 credit hours of graduate courses in Petroleum Engineering with 6 of these credit hours being two core program courses chosen from PETE 590 , PETE 591 , PETE 592 , and PETE 595 . [Note that no more than 6 graduate hours may be below the 500 level.]
  2. 6 credit hours achieved by successful completion of ENGR 501  and MCHE 508  
  3. A minimum of 3 credit hours of either mathematics, statistics, or the sciences at 500 or 400G level
  4. A minimum of 3 credit hours of additional graduate courses at 500 and/or 600 level in either Petroleum Engineering or another engineering program
  5. Enrollment in the Petroleum Engineering Graduate Seminar course PETE 500  in the graduation semester
  6. A minimum of 6 credit hours of thesis work, a thesis approved by the graduate committee, and
  7. A paper from the thesis submitted for publication in a technical journal or for presentation in a professional conference, or a provisional patent or a submitted patent application

Non-Thesis Program


The Non-Thesis track requires completion of a minimum of thirty-six (36) semester hours of graduate credit with a minimum GPA of 3.0 as follows:

  1. A minimum of 18 credit hours of graduate courses in Petroleum Engineering with 6 of these credit hours being two core program courses chosen from PETE 590 , PETE 591 , PETE 592 , and PETE 595 . [Note that no more than 6 graduate hours may be below the 500 level.]
  2. 6 credit hours achieved by successful completion of ENGR 501  and MCHE 508 
  3. A minimum of 6 credit hours of ether mathematics, statistics, or the sciences at 500 or 400G level
  4. A minimum of 3 credit hours of additional graduate courses at 500 and/or 600 level in either Petroleum Engineering or another engineering program
  5. Enrollment in the Petroleum Engineering Graduate Seminar course PETE 500  in the graduation semester
  6. 3 hours of a research component course, PETE 598 , the submission of a research report, and a technical presentation in the Petroleum Engineering Graduate Seminar
  7. Satisfactory performance on a comprehensive exam to be given during the graduation semester

Note


All graduate courses must be approved by both the committee chairperson and department graduate coordinator.
