The Master of Science (M.S.) degree program in Athletic Training is a professional, clinical-preparatory degree program that is designed to lead to national certification and state licensure in the profession of Athletic Training. Athletic Training focuses on collaborating with healthcare providers to optimize activity and participation of physically active individuals.
Students are admitted in the Summer in a cohort model with full-time enrollment required. Students pursue either a thesis or non-thesis track of study. The non-thesis track engages students as clinical practitioners in Athletic Training, while the thesis track prepares students for a career path in Athletic Training education and scholarly research.

Admission Requirements
In addition to the general admission requirements from the Graduate School, application and admission to the graduate program in Athletic Training requires: - A bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or allied health-related field
- Prerequisite postsecondary coursework in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Statistics, and Biomechanics or Structural Kinesiology
- Three letters of reference. At least one letter should be from a licensed and/or certified athletic trainer who has supervised your observation hours.
- Evidence of completion of 75 hours of observation under a Certified Athletic Trainer (AT) submitted on the standardized form available from the Graduate School. If observation hours are completed with multiple healthcare providers, separate forms are required.

Substitutions for undergraduate coursework in item 2 above may be considered after admission and on a case-by-case basis by the program; approval of substitutions must be conveyed by the Graduate Coordinator to and approved by the Dean of the Graduate School at the time of application review and admission. Once all materials are received and evaluated by the Graduate School, the MS Athletic Training faculty will review the application. Upon review, the faculty will extend invitations to a select number of applicants to interview for a position in the upcoming cohort. UL Lafayette students who are earning a Kinesiology Exercise Science Pre-Professional or Kinesiology Pre-Athletic Training degree may be considered for direct admission to the MS Athletic Training Program if they meet the following criteria: - Have satisfied all Graduate School and MS Athletic Training program requirements for application and admission
- Have earned an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Have earned a grade of “B” or higher in the following courses completed at UL Lafayette:
Degree Requirements
Students in the Master of Science Degree in Athletic Training program prepare to be practitioners through the completion of 55 graduate credit hours and 4 clinical rotations. The program requires that each student demonstrate a general, comprehensive knowledge of the field of study. Students must earn a “B” or higher in their Clinical Experiences in Athletic Training courses (KNES 551 , KNES 552 , KNES 553 , and KNES 554 ). During these courses, students will demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and hands-on expertise in the clinical setting. The objectives associated with these core courses are directly linked to the Commission on Accreditation in Athletic Training (CAATE) Educational standards. |
