The Counselor Education program, a division of the College of Education, offers the Master of Science degree with areas of emphasis in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The student who successfully completes the degree will have satisfied the education requirements for several state and national certifications and licenses.

Course Requirements


Students accepted into the M.S. in Counselor Education program must complete a core educational requirement of 27 credits.

In addition to the core, students must choose an area of emphasis: School Counseling or Mental Health Counseling. Each emphasis includes 12 credits specific to the area of emphasis. In addition to the core and emphasis area, all students must complete 9-12 credits in a practicum and an internship in the area of emphasis. Mental Health Counseling students must complete an additional 12 hours of approved electives. All students are required to pass a comprehensive examination. There is no thesis option. A total of 48 credits is required for the School Counseling emphasis. A total of 60 credits is required for the Mental Health Counseling emphasis.

Residence Requirement


A student must satisfy residence requirements by successfully completing a minimum of 18 semester hours of degree program credit on the campus of UL Lafayette.
