GEOL 333 - Introduction to Seismology Credit Hours: 3 Lecture Contact Hours: 3 Lab Contact Hours: 0 Grading Option: A,B,C,D,F Exploration of earthquakes comparing seismic observations with models based on continuum mechanics and wave propagation theory with a focus on the study of shallow earthquakes. Topics include faults along rocks held by frictional forces, the sudden movement and accumulated shear stress along faults, stress drops, and how sudden slips along faults release seismic energy via waves.
