Nurses currently holding a Master of Science degree in nursing from a nationally accredited graduate nursing program and a national certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, or Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner are eligible to apply to the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Post-Master’s Certificate (PMC) program.
The PMHNP PMC program is accelerated, offering completion in four semesters. The didactic courses are offered online, and clinical courses have an online didactic component plus direct patient care clinical experiences (120 - 210 hours in each course) in which the student works with an approved advanced practice preceptor guided by graduate faculty.
The PMHNP PMC program is approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (https://www.ccneaccreditation.org).
Graduates of the PMHNP PMC program are eligible to sit for the National PMHNP certification examination and apply for an advanced practice PMHNP license.

Admission and Prerequisites
In addition to the general application and admission requirements set by the Graduate School, the PMHNP PMC program requires:
- MSN degree from a graduate nursing program nationally accredited through CCNE or ACEN
- Minimum overall graduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Prerequisite coursework that demonstrates the adequacy of the content across the lifespan including Advanced Health Assessment, Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics, and Advanced Pathophysiology
- Two letters of recommendation*; and
- One recommendation must be from someone who can attest to the clinical competencies of the applicant at an Advanced Practice level.
- One recommendation must be from a former faculty member in a nursing program, a current or former nursing supervisor, or a nursing leader who can speak to the applicant’s potential for success in the graduate certificate program.
- A current resume
- Statement of Purpose
- Evidence of current unencumbered Louisiana or Multistate Registered Nurse license
- Evidence of a current unencumbered Louisiana Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license
- Evidence of current national certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, or Women’s Health Nurse practitioner
Course Requirements
Students must successfully complete the following courses with a grade of “B” or better to receive the PMHNP PMC. Courses are delivered in an accelerated format and designed to be completed in four semesters as follows:
Semester I (6 credit hours)
Semester II (5 credit hours)
Semester III (5 credit hours)
Semester IV (4 credit hours)
Total Clinical Hours: 510
