The requirements of this program are continually under examination and revision by the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). The University reserves the right to make changes as required. All enrolled candidates are subject to these changes.
All required state licensure exams must be passed by established deadlines.

Admission Requirements
Degree: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
GPA: Overall undergraduate GPA of 2.2 or higher; students with less than a 2.2 GPA may be admitted conditionally. Students admitted conditionally must obtain a 3.0 GPA for the first 12 semester hours and must complete with a 2.5 GPA.
Praxis Exams:
- Passing scores on the Praxis content exam appropriate for the area and/or level:
- Praxis II Music Content Area (5113)
Resume: List all work experiences since completion of the candidate’s undergraduate degree.
Philosophy: Provide a single-page essay outlining the candidate’s reasons for and commitment to teaching.
Music Prerequisites:
- Music Theory: Music Theory II or equivalency Exam
- Keyboard Skills: Piano II or equivalency Exam
- Vocal: Audition passed at level of a barrier exam
- Ensemble Experience: highly recommended for major instrument
Prescriptive: Candidates will receive, during their initial consult, a course prescriptive form from the Office of Student Services in the College of Education. The School of Music and Performing Arts may require additional coursework to be completed prior to acceptance into the PBC. Candidates will bring the form to the School of Music and Performing Arts and return the completed and signed form to the Office of Student Services in the College of Education.

Course Requirements
No final grade below “C” will be accepted for any professional education or specialized academic education course required for this certification.
9 credit hours of required course work must be passed prior to registering for an Academic Internship or Teacher Residency.

Teacher Residency/Academic Internship Requirements
In addition to coursework, candidates must complete an Academic Internship or Teacher Residency. Academic Internship and Teacher Residency candidates are required to register for the following courses in consecutive semesters.
The Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam and 9 credit hours of required course work must be passed prior to registering for an Academic Internship or Teacher Residency. Visit ETS-Registration, Test Dates, and Centers to register for the Principles of Learning and Teaching:
Candidates may choose from the following based on their grade level interest:
- Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades K-6, exam 5622
- Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 5-9, exam 5623
- Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12, exam 5624
Teacher Residency (2 Consecutive Semesters)
Candidates will teach under the supervision of the cooperating teacher at their assigned school. The candidates are assigned a school by the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences based on their certification area. Additionally, the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences will send an assigned University supervisor to evaluate the candidate’s teaching at their assigned school.
Academic Internship (2 Consecutive Semesters)
Candidates may be eligible for an academic internship if they have a Louisiana Department of Education issued Practitioner’s License (PL) and 0-2 years of teaching experience in their certification area.
Candidates must complete and return the Experience Documentation Form to the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences at the Soulier House for verification of their current teaching position. Upon verification, the Office of Teacher Clinical Experiences will send an assigned university supervisor to the assigned school to evaluate your teaching during the academic internship.
